In workshop today the topic of worldbuilding came up.  As someone who has built my own world, this subject is one I’ve spent a lot of time considering.  When I rebuilt Avarlyn a few years ago, I based my concepts on real-world sources, reading things like Guns, Germs, and Steel, looking at tectonic plate science, religious history, and the like.  These days, there are many good, derivitive works out there borrowing from a plethora of sources.

Here’s a quick rundown:
* Interview with Tamora Pierce
* Imaginary Worlds
* Holly Lisle’s Questions About Worldbuilding
* Creating a Realistic Fantasy World
* Fantasy Religion Design
* The New World, parts 1-9
* Fantasy Worldbuilding Questions

  1. Thanks for these helpful articles–I shall pass them on to my teenage son, who is a budding fantasy author. God help him, you’d think that watching his dad with HIS crazy writing career would be a deterrent. Brave lad…
